Fix Error -123 not an HFS volume!
Hierarchical File System or HFS is launched by the Apple mainly to work accordingly with the 20 MB hard disk for Mac operating system. The HFS has replaced the MFS (Macintosh File System) that were the original file system and were used in Mac operating system. New HFS has many advanced features that can be taken in terms of performance.
But sometimes while using the HFS file system volume cannot be recognized by operating system and due to this entire system becomes inaccessible. This also results in data loss situation. If you have the backup then you can easily restore the deleted data. If backup is not available then you will have to use data recovery tools.
User may come across the error message:
“-123 wrgVolTypErr Not an HFS volume [wrong volume type error or (obsolete) operation not supported for MFS]”
This issue is related to the Macintosh as entire data is stored and managed in its hard drive. And error, damage and corruption in the hard drive results in the stored data becoming inaccessible and worst happen when data gets deleted.
Main reasons behind corruption are:
- Unexpected system shut down,
- Virus attack,
- Operating system crash,
- Malfunctioning of application.
When Error -123 not an HFS volume in file system occurs then the user can at first go for the inbuilt utility known as Disk Utility, it is always available to check the integrity and security of Mac operating system. If this fails to resolve the error problem then you can go for ‘fsck’ command line utility, this checks the startup and repair the damage.
But when both the utility does not work then will have to format the file system and then reconstruct the file system.
